Professional Development Overview
Professional development and continuing education for library staff is a vital element of SLA’s mission. A work force that is aware of the trends in libraries and information is vital to excellent library service in Saskatchewan. SLA offers its members a variety of opportunities for professional development.
Saskatchewan Libraries Conference
SLA plans and hosts the Saskatchewan Libraries Conference in the first week of May annually, bringing together library workers and leaders from across the province. The conference provides a valuable opportunity for professional development and networking in Saskatchewan’s library community.
SLA Awards & Student Bursaries
SLA is pleased to give out several awards and bursaries each year to reward individuals and organizations who are furthering libraries and literacy in Saskatchewan, and to encourage students pursuing a career in library services.
SLA gives out annually:
- The Maureen Woods Education Bursary ($5,000)
- The Indigenous Student MLIS Education Bursary ($5,000)
- The Mary Donaldson Award of Merit ($1,200)
- The SLA Frances Morrison Award
Continuing Education Grants
SLA offers its members grants to attend or host a continuing education or professional development opportunity. There are two application deadlines each year: February 15 and August 15.
Library Trustee Training & Resources
After the Saskatchewan Library Trustees’ Association (SLTA) dissolved in 2022, the organization entrusted SLA with a number of the documents and resources it had created over the years. Those resources are now available to anyone.
